Back
It was pure accident, err . . . genius, that Mike suggested with our very first issue back in the summer of 2000 that he and I should each do an opinion piece to introduce ourselves to the readers. It has now become a firmly entrenched part of each issue that the readers respond to very favourably. Neither of us are writers, although we both love words (he likes to talk and I like to read) so the response is not based on the elegance of our prose. Rather, it is the sense of connection that people are able to feel with us as we talk about lives very much like their own. That is what Ossekeag Publishing is all about - community connections. It is a privilege to play a part in so many diverse households
Read the lastest editions of Musing below: TERROR AND JOY We recently spent a few days vacationing in PEI with our daughter and granddaughter. When our girls were young we went to the Island every other summer, and the opposite year went elsewhere. Since our girls have grown, this is the first time in many years that we had gone. Carmen was an absolute joy. Never a complaint or a whine, just soaking up the new experiences with a big smile. Rainbow Valley was a family staple when visiting PEI, but alas it is no more. We did go to Sandspit and to the new Shining Waters parks, however - this was mostly Carmen's vacation. For those of you not familiar, both are amusement parks with many of the same attractions as at the Ex, but in a beautiful green setting. The weather was perfect, sunny and not too hot. With few exceptions Carmen was tall enough for the adult rides at Sandspit and she was eager to try them. She chose the Tilt-A-Whirl for her first "big kid" ride with her mother. The inventor of the ride designed it "to provide amusement apparatus wherein the riders will be moved in general through an orbit and will unexpectedly swing, snap from side to side or rotate without in any way being able to figure what movement may next take place in the car." As the ride began, Carmen looked a little apprehensive; as it continued she began to scream, truly afraid; by the end of it she was hesitantly smiling. She went on to enjoy several "kid" rides (merry-go-round and such) and the Scrambler, which she loved. She then asked to go on the Tilt-A-Whirl again. Her mother hesitated, but Carmen was sure. This time she enjoyed it. By the third and fourth time she loved it and when given the opportunity for one final ride before we left she again chose the Tilt-A-Whirl. From total terror to total joy in one afternoon. There is much to learn from a 4 year old mastering the terror of a new experience, converting it to pure joy. She was determined not to be defeated and quickly learned the balance between fear and fun. New experiences can scare the pants of any of us, but if we don't push past that we can never get to the moments of pure joy on the other side. "Never let the fear of striking out get in your way." ~ Babe Ruth.
