Musings - "MISSION STATEMENT"

Back

"Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its on-going mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations - to boldly go where no one has gone before."
Yes, I am a "Trekkie" (or "Trekker" if you prefer) from way back. I do not recall if I saw the very first episode when it first aired in 1966 or watched it some time later, but for certain I loved the original series and it is still by far my favourite. Looking at it now, the "special affects" are laughable but the characters and story lines are still top notch. Last night I finally watched the new movie, which is the back story for the original series. Since I do not have television, I watched on my computer while spending the two hours on my stepper machine (seems appropriate for a Trekker, right?). I had not planned to do the full two hours in one go, but like a good book I was hooked and did not want to stop in the middle, so two hours it was!
Wikipedia defines a mission statement as: "a formal short written statement of the purpose of a company or organization. The mission statement should guide the actions of the organization, spell out its overall goal, provide a sense of direction, and guide decision-making." Coincidentally, the term came into use at about the same time as Star Trek originated. And as a mission statement, the weekly introduction of the show very clearly defined the guiding principles for the U.S.S. Enterprise. Clearly defining who we are, what we believe in and what we want to accomplish is a worthwhile endeavour for all of us, whether in our personal lives, our work lives or our businesses. Having a clear mission, a horizon on which to set our sights, gives us purpose and inspiration to keep going when the inevitable rough times seek to trip us up or divert our path. And it doesn't hurt to have a little fun along the way . . . the original Enterprise crew always did. "Live long and prosper."   801
